On Chrome I was able to turn it off by going to advanced settings and there was a box that said I had chosen to have some files automatically open after downloading. I ran into this problem also. My auto open feature was hidden in advanced settings. Settings - Advanced - Downloads. It was near the top something like "Open certain types of files after downloading" with option to clear that setting. You might want to disable auto open for a particular file type, or for all file types. If you want to disable it for only one file type, download a file of the same type or just drag drop one onto Chrome. When it appears in the download bar, click the little arrow next to it and uncheck the ‘Always open files of this type’ option.
